After the October 14 Patch: Changed Input or a Bug?
First confirm your installed build. On Build 443, compare a zoom problem with the new camera inputs and a trim-selection problem with the current trim workflow. Old inputs can fail without proving your save is damaged.[1]
For an existing dress, inspect trim fit and the current colour/fabric indicators before recutting. For a missing Gift button, check the later gifting unlock before attempting any reset.[1]
If the game will not launch and you use a loader or translation patch, record both versions and check the mod compatibility checklist. A working older package does not establish compatibility after a game update. Report whether the failure also occurs with the author’s documented unmodified setup.
The developer reports performance improvements but acknowledges continuing crashes. No single fix is established here. Preserve your saves, record platform, build, error and last action, then use the report checklist. Do not delete a save or begin a new game as a diagnostic shortcut.[1]
🍎 Mac Installation Issues
❌ "Can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software"
Problem: When you try to open Dressmaker.app, macOS displays a security warning and blocks the app.
Why This Happens:
Dressmaker is not notarized by Apple because the developers don't have an Apple Developer account (source: official itch.io page). macOS Gatekeeper blocks unsigned apps by default for security.
What this warning means: macOS is asking you to approve an app that is not notarized. Only continue when the file came from the official Dressmaker itch.io page; this guide cannot verify files from other sources.
✅ Solution (Official Method from Apple):
- Try to open Dressmaker.app (you'll see the error)
- Click "OK" to dismiss the warning
- Go to System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS)
- Click Privacy & Security
- Scroll down to the Security section
- You'll see: "Dressmaker.app was blocked from use because it is not from an identified developer"
- Click "Open Anyway"
- A confirmation dialog appears—click "Open" again
- Enter your Mac password if prompted
- The game will now launch successfully
Source: Apple Support
💡 Alternative: Control + Click Method
- Hold Control key and click on Dressmaker.app
- Select "Open" from the context menu
- Click "Open" again in the dialog
❌ Mac Version Shows Older Version (0.5.0 instead of 0.5.1+)
Problem: The download page shows version 0.5.0 for Mac even though newer versions (0.5.1, 0.5.5) exist for Windows/Linux.
Status: This was reported by a player on September 24, 2025 (source). The developers may have fixed this by now.
✅ Solutions:
- Check the itch.io download page for the latest Mac build
- If only older versions are listed, report the issue on the official Discord
- The version difference may not affect gameplay significantly (most features work on 0.5.0)
🪟 Windows Installation & Launch Issues
❌ "Windows protected your PC" (SmartScreen Warning)
Problem: Windows Defender SmartScreen blocks the game when you try to run it for the first time.
Why This Happens: Dressmaker is not digitally signed by Microsoft, so Windows treats it as an "unrecognized app."
✅ Solution:
- When the warning appears, click "More info"
- Click "Run anyway"
- The game will launch normally
❌ Game Won't Launch (No Error Message)
Problem: Double-clicking Dressmaker.exe does nothing, or the process appears briefly in Task Manager then disappears.
✅ Solutions to Try:
1. Update Graphics Drivers:
- NVIDIA: Visit nvidia.com/drivers
- AMD: Visit amd.com/support
- Intel: Use Windows Update or visit Intel's site
2. Install DirectX & Visual C++ Runtimes:
- Download DirectX End-User Runtime
- Install Visual C++ Redistributables (all versions)
3. Run as Administrator:
- Right-click Dressmaker.exe → "Run as administrator"
4. Check Antivirus:
- Your antivirus may be blocking the game
- Add Dressmaker folder to your antivirus exclusions list
5. Re-download Fresh Copy:
- Delete current installation
- Download again from itch.io
- Extract to a new location
❌ Can't Extract ZIP File
Problem: Error when trying to extract the downloaded ZIP file.
✅ Solutions:
- Re-download the file (it may have been corrupted)
- Use Windows built-in "Extract All" (right-click ZIP → Extract All)
- Or download 7-Zip (free, reliable extractor)
- Make sure you have enough disk space (~150 MB free)
🐧 Linux Issues
❌ Nothing Happens When Double-Clicking Executable
Problem: Double-clicking Dressmaker.x86_64 does nothing.
Cause: The file doesn't have execute permissions.
✅ Solution:
# Navigate to extracted folder
cd ~/Downloads/Dressmaker
# Make executable
chmod +x Dressmaker.x86_64
# Run the game
./Dressmaker.x86_64
❌ Error: Missing Shared Libraries
Problem: Error message about missing .so files.
✅ Solution (Ubuntu/Debian):
sudo apt update
sudo apt install libgl1-mesa-glx libxcursor1 libxinerama1
🐛 Gameplay Bugs & Known Issues
Steam Build 403: cutting cursor and other launch fixes
The developer reports that Build 403 fixes the mouse cursor disappearing during the cutting-room tutorial. It also restores the Back button in the store tutorial and fixes shop buttons on extremely wide screens. If you have the Steam release, let Steam finish updating before retrying the same step. If the cursor or button still fails, record your installed build, operating system, display size, and the exact tutorial step, then use the reporting section below. Avoid applying the prototype-only cutting advice as though it were a verified full-game workaround.
The official Build 403 announcement ↗ reports the fixes; this site has not reproduced them. The same announcement says some lace trim tags and accepted-but-unpaid failed commissions were fixed. See the lace guide or customer guide for those separate symptoms.
🪲 Lace/Trim Placement is Difficult and Glitchy
Status: The comments summarized here concern the prototype. Steam Build 443 changes trim selection, placement and camera inputs; use the current-build links above before applying these older workarounds.
Common symptoms:
- Lace or piping is hard to trace around sleeves, necklines, or hems
- Pins can be selected while trying to rotate the mannequin
- Right-click recovery can change the camera or zoom state for some players
- Trackpad-only placement can feel imprecise
Workarounds:
- Set the mannequin angle before placing pins
- Place one trim point at a time instead of dragging quickly
- Use a mouse for small placement work if a trackpad feels unreliable
- See the Lace, Trim & Piping Guide for sleeve, hem, pin, and camera recovery tips
🪲 Sewing Machine Hand Twitches/Shakes
Status: Possibly Fixed in v0.4.4 (Sept 9, 2025), but developers couldn't reproduce to confirm.
Symptoms: The hand icon shakes or glitches during sewing, especially when not actively moving the fabric.
Source: Developer statement v0.4.4
✅ Workarounds if still occurring:
- Use keyboard controls: Space + Arrow keys (added v0.4.4) instead of mouse
- Usually visual only – doesn't affect actual sewing quality
- If it interferes with gameplay, restart the sewing phase
- Report on Discord with your system specs
🪲 Sewing Guideline (Dotted Line) Disappears
Status: Known Issue - Intermittent bug, no official fix yet.
Symptoms: The green dotted line showing where to sew disappears mid-seam, making it impossible to follow.
Source: Player report
✅ Workaround:
- First try: Click away from sewing interface, then click back (this often fixes it)
- If that doesn't work: Save progress, exit to main menu, reload save
- As last resort: Sew "blind" following the edge of the fabric piece
- Watch the quality percentage meter – if it drops too low, stop and restart the seam
🪲 Scissors Keep Moving Without Cutting (Cutting Bug)
Status: Known Issue - Affects v0.5.5 and earlier.
How it happens:
- You click scissors to start cutting a pattern piece
- Before cutting finishes, you leave the cutting room (switch tabs/scenes)
- When you return, scissors continue moving but fabric isn't being cut
- The pattern piece stays in place, blocking that area (collision)
Source: Player report on itch.io
⚠️ Workaround:
Exit the game entirely and restart. There's no in-game fix currently.
Prevention: Don't switch away from cutting room while scissors are actively cutting. Wait for each piece to finish cutting before moving to another tab.
🪲 Ruffle Skirt Panels Can't Reach 100% Grain Quality
Status: Reported Issue in v0.5.1+ (Sept 24, 2025) - No developer response yet.
Symptoms: Some ruffle skirt panels (specifically Tier 2 and/or Tier 3 patterns) show green outline when aligned, but still can't achieve 100% grain quality score.
Source: Player comment on v0.5.1 devlog
⚠️ Current Status:
This appears to be a pattern-specific bug introduced in v0.5.1 with the new dress patterns. No workaround exists yet. If this affects your dress quality:
- Choose a different skirt pattern if possible
- Report the specific pattern causing issues on Discord
🪲 Tutorial Softlock (No Money for Accessories)
Status: Design Issue - Tutorial doesn't prevent overspending.
How it happens: If you spend your entire budget on fabric during the tutorial, you won't have money left to buy the required accessory, causing a softlock (can't progress, can't undo).
Source: Player report
✅ Solution:
Restart the game and be more careful with budget allocation.
Prevention: During tutorial, save ~$5-10 for accessories before finalizing fabric purchases.
🪲 Cut Fabric Pieces Reappear on Cutting Table
Status: Known Issue - Still occurring in v0.5.5.
Symptoms: After discarding/using fabric pieces, they sometimes ghost back onto the cutting table, creating visual clutter (though they don't interfere with actual cutting).
Source: Player report
✅ Workaround:
This is mostly visual – the ghost pieces don't affect gameplay. You can cut through them. If it's too confusing, save and reload your game to clear the table.
🪲 Can't Scroll Accessories Inventory When All Purchased
Status: Known Issue - Affects accessory menu.
Symptoms: When you own at least one of every accessory type, the dressmaking menu doesn't allow scrolling, so bottom accessories are hidden.
Source: Player report
⚠️ Workaround:
No perfect fix currently. Don't buy all accessory types if you need to use ones at the bottom of the list. Stick to a subset of accessories you frequently use.
⚡ Performance Issues
⚠️ Game Runs Slowly / Stuttering
Problem: Low frame rate, choppy movement, or delays when interacting.
✅ Solutions:
1. Close Background Programs: Close browsers, Discord, streaming apps while playing.
2. Update Graphics Drivers: See "Game Won't Launch" section above for driver update links.
3. Check System Requirements: The full Steam game lists 8 GB RAM minimum; Windows storage is 2 GB, which is a different requirement. Compare your platform with the system-requirements guide.
4. Lower Screen Resolution: If your monitor is 4K, try running at 1080p.
5. Disable Overlays: Turn off Discord overlay, Xbox Game Bar, GeForce Experience overlay.
Note: Dressmaker is a lightweight game built in Unity. If you experience persistent performance issues, your system may not meet minimum requirements, or there could be a driver/software conflict.
